Contraindications to Massage

Contraindications are any condition that makes any massage approach undesirable, improper or harmful. There are some instances when a condition makes massage absolutely undesirable and other cases when massage can be proceeded with caution.

A few examples of some absolute contraindications include advanced kidney failure, acute stage pneumonia and liver failure. In any of these cases, massage should not be given.

A regional absolute contraindication is where massage can be given, apart from specific areas such as open wounds, irritable skin conditions, recent burns or frostbite. These conditions require the awareness of the possible negative effects of massage. Adaptions may need to be made to a treatment plan where regional contraindications are present.

Some other conditions where adapted massage may be possible:
  • Cancer
  • Asthma
  • Epilepsy
  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Pregnancy and Labour
